Can I hire a Health inspector to check my apartment?
There's asbestos in my apartment that my landlord won't take care of, and that we were unaware of when we signed the lease. It's an extremely old house that he's done all of the repairs to, very cheaply done, and he's not a professional anything (electrician, carpenter, etc.) The electric sockets are so worn, our cords fall out of the outlets. I've had to replug things in more often than you can imagine. Which is a HUGE fire hazard. He won't let us out of the lease. Among a dozen other reasons for wanting to move out, the second hand smoke from the old codger next door has given me asthma. I think hiring a health inspector of some kind could help us get out of the lease. Asbestos is a huge problem, and I don't want to keep breathing it in. Who would I talk to? How much is an inspector? How long does the process take? What steps would we need to take? Any tips?
