How do I know if I've been contaminated with asbestos?

My mom, my cousin and I recently started a DIY home renovation in our basement (we are replacing the wood laminate floor, underneath which is a partial tile job). To my alarm, tonight my mom suggested we start to wear masks for the rest of duration of the project. I'm extremely upset because I had no idea that the possibility of asbestos was even present in our basement, and she's making this suggestion half way through the project. We now suspect that the partial tile job under the laminate floor is asbestos; it was installed in the 1950's and looks exactly like the pictures described on the internet. We are already well into dismantling it when this issue came up. Anyway, my question is, "is there any place I can go to have myself examined to see if I have officially been contaminated with asbestos?"
