Can older ceiling tiles contain asbestos?

I have a ceiling in a breezeway that is tiled with 9x9 ceiling tiles and I wondered can they contain asbestos? They're at least 40+ yrs old. We'd like to replace it w/a drywall ceiling. What do you do? Replace them? Cover them? If anyone knows id appreciate it thank you
