Is the chipboard in my house asbestos?

In our house our walls are covered in painted chipboard. When I was little I used to pick bits off. I think I vaguely recall seeing some kind of dust in the air. Could this have been asbestos and if so could I be at risk? Our house is quite old (I.e. Fifty years or so)
